How to achieve Holiday Rental Success – it’s all in the detail!

Holiday Rental Success to me, is providing my guests with the best possible holiday experience I can.   I want that experience to be amazing.

So how do you deliver an amazing holiday rental experience? You focus on the detail!

A property may be in a great location, have excellent facilities and be surrounded by fabulous restaurants.  But that’s not enough.  It’s the small things that are done by the owner or provided by the holiday rental that make all the difference to the holiday experience.

After a recent family holiday, as a self catering holiday guest, rather than an owner, the importance of detail was made even more apparent and is the reason for me writing this blog.

My accommodation didn’t provide me with an amazing holiday experience.   I still had a lovely holiday – great weather, great family time, great food and wine.  But accommodation wise – average rather than amazing.

And it’s so frustrating knowing that the owner or their property manager could have made small changes which would have delivered my “amazing”.

I’m talking about such things as:

  • I didn’t expect or want small, hard towels. I wanted large, soft ones!
  • I wasn’t interested in reading the coffee table book about New York’s architecture (we were staying in a French country house) but a local guide book to flick through would have been of great interest.
  • I wanted to be able to report the fact that the front door didn’t lock properly, for the sake of future guests as well as ourselves. But I wasn’t provided with contact details for the property manager or owner, so how can I report such problems?  (For the record, on departure I left them a note.)
  • I expected some toys and board games to be provided. Thank goodness we took our own set of playing cards and our trusted Uno game.  But a bit of variety, provided by the holiday rental, wouldn’t have gone amiss. Like all holiday makers we didn’t have space in our luggage for any board games or many toys.
  • The bathrooms were spotlessly clean but the dusting was not! Once I spotted the cobwebs in the corners and dust webs hanging from the ceiling, I couldn’t help but look for others!  Ten more minutes onto the cleaning schedule would have sorted this problem.
  • No hand soap by the basins (kitchen and bathrooms) is one of my pet hates.  As a holiday rental guest I don’t pack any soap as I expected it would be provided.  We used washing up liquid or shower gel to wash our hands until we’d been to a supermarket to stock up on soap!

Many will argue that these are all minor points, but that’s exactly it.  The property itself was lovely and in a great location but by failing to look after the detail, as a guest, my accommodation experience was not amazing.

Take my recent experience as a reminder of how details matter.
